There are hundreds of collections of family papers within the Manuscripts Department. Some of the prominent individuals in these collections are mentioned in other contexts. Space, however, does not permit the listing of all families. Listed below are those family collections containing over fifty items and not mentioned in another category.

These family collections may prove to be one of the richest sources of information, as they often contain material relating to a variety of topics. For example, the de la Vergne Family Papers contain information on the War of 1812, Louisiana politics, business, education, and social organizations, not to mention the material on cultural history.

The plantation was run by women during most of its existence.
