Pro Bono Publico
Address of the Grant
Campaign Committee of Louisiana 1880. Issued May, 1879.
from the introduction:
"Pioneer Grant
Club, Historical, First Campaign -- 1868
"The Club was
started by several patriotic and liberal minded men, who had adopted
Louisiana as their new home, together with a few conservative
thinking men whom they met here, who believed that a sectional war was
over, and that further acts of crimination and re-crimination would be
disastrous to both sections.
"The first meeting of the
devotees of the 'Pioneer Grant Club' was held on the 7th day of December,
1867, when the following preamble and agreement was adopted, and signed by
the persons whose names are hereto attached, and one hundred others:
PREAMBLE
AND AGREEMENT.
"The undersigned, residents
of the Parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, having in view the
welfare of this State, and believing in the unity and integrity of the
Federal Government, and in view of the fact that an election is soon
to be held in this State for Gubernatorial and other officers, and an
election of Delegates to the National Republican Convention to meet in
Chicago in May next:
"Now, therefore, for the
purpose of carrying out our views, and aiding in the establishment of a
government Republican in form in this State;
"We do hereby agree to form
ourselves into a Club, political in its nature, and to aid by our means
and personal exertions in the elections to take place in this State, and
to support for its officers, men of character and ability, without regard
to party ties, but who may be known for their loyalty, and zeal in the
interests of Louisiana:
"For President, we agree
to support as our first choice GENERAL ULYSSES S. GRANT.
"To this end and purpose the
name of our organization shall be known as the 'Pioneer Grant Club of
Louisiana," its meetings to be held in the City of New Orleans.
(Signed)
[names of seventeen individuals]
"and one hundred others.
"This number was
subsequently increased to about 1200 members.
W. B. Cummins
Secretary"
