| James
Freret Residence, 2340 Constance Street, New Orleans. c.1874. |
James Freret (1838-1897),
nephew of
New Orleans mayor, William Freret and cousin of architect William A.
Freret, was one of New Orleans most prolific later 19th
century architects. James Freret partnered a short time with William
A. Freret to design the
Moresque Building, and later, on his own, designed the Board of Trade
building and many residential structures in and around New Orleans.
The drawings
in this exhibit were kept in a portfolio to show potential clients
completed Freret projects to help them decide how they would like
their own house designed. The drawings were done in ink and
watercolor, and are small, some sheets having two projects per
sheet. Most of the drawings show the elevation framed with clouded
skies and include floor plans. Current addresses are used if project
location is known.
