Framing Modernism

Selected Photographs by Frank Lotz Miller

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Frank Lotz Miller (1923-1993) came to New Orleans during his childhood. His interest in photography dates from his teens and, after graduating from Tulane University, he worked in the studio of C. Bennette Moore, and then opened his own studio at 1115 Washington Avenue, in 1953. As well as architecture, Miller photographed fashion, food, portraits, and events for many regional businesses, organizations, and publications.

Frank Lotz Miller won many awards in professional photography competitions and was featured in the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company's Architectural Photographers Invitational brochure (1973). His photographs were published regularly in Architectural Forum, Architectural Record, Interiors, and Progressive Architecture, as well as popular interest magazines. Working at the same time as such well-known architectural photographers as Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller, Miller interpreted modernist architecture in the southern United States.
