Inscription and signature from Heinlein, Robert A. (Robert Anson), 1907-1988, The puppet masters. Garden City, N. Y., Doubleday, 1951. 219 p. 21 cm. Signed and inscribed first edition. Jones Hall Rare Books (Heinlein/Deutsch) PZ3.H364 Pu. Heinlein/Deutsch Science Fiction Collection; Hermann Bacher Deutsch, donor.

One strength of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Collection is the number of signed first editions. Many of these are by Robert A. Heinlein and are part of the Hermann Bacher Deutsch Collection.

The Deutsch Collection is an example of the essential role donors play in creating research collections.  Hermann Bacher Deutsch (1889-1970) was a journalist with the New Orleans Item newspaper for over four decades. He also wrote for the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Esquire, Collier's, the Literary Digest. His books include The Incredible Yanqui (1931), about General Lee Christmas, and The Wedge (1935), about the Mexican revolution.

Heinlein and Deutsch were personal friends and Heinlein made a point of sending Deutsch inscribed copies of his new books. The inscriptions were usually warm, personal, and revealing, as here, where Heinlein tells Deutsch:

Dear Hermann,

This one I did in an unfinished house while Ginny put four coats of paint on it to seal us against the winter snows.

Bob
