Scope and Contents: The collection consists primarily of personal correspondence between Hovey K. Clarke, a Michigan attorney, and Martha Upham, before they were married in 1852. There are also letters from friends and family as well as a circular letter (1849) concerning an anti-slavery resolution presented by Clarke at a town meeting in Marshall, Michigan. In addition, there are photographs, newspaper clippings, and issues of the Portland, Maine, Daily Press describing the 1866 fire that destroyed a large part of the city.
