Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection contains the correspondence and financial documents of Daniel Loring Winsor, captain of the Coliseum and New Orleans shipping agent for Magoun & Son, Boston.
The letters from 1829 to 1832 are to Winsor from John Brown (Boston), the owner of the Coliseum. Winsor received these letters while in port at Havana, Mararuas, Hamburg and St. Petersburg. Brown gave instructions as to cargo, destinations, ballast, et cetera.
The 1841-1848 letters are retained copies from Winsor to the firm of Magoun & Son, Boston, ship owners. Winsor acted as Magoun's agent in New Orleans and elected cargo and destinations for company ships. He discussed availability of ships in port, their physical condition, freight rates, supply and prices of sugar and cotton, visits of insurance inspectors, disagreements over commissions, and competition with British ships. He also discussed leasing ships to the U.S. government during the Mexican War, and shipping to American forces in Mexico.
