Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of original manuscript music scores penned by Eugène Chassaignac. Included is an engraved zinc plate from page 1 of his song, "Pour Ma Mère." Ten of the scores are dated and belong to the period from 1867 to 1873. Several scores are fragmentary. One includes sketches. Lyricists include: T. H. Poisson, Marie Carpantier, Hegeseppe Moreau, A. de Châtillon, L. P. Canonge, A. Siret, T. B. Aldrich, Mery, and A. Guérin.

Biographical Note

Eugène Chassaignac, a native of Nantes, France, came to New Orleans, Louisiana, during the 1850s. He was a music educator and became a well-known composer. His works included popular Confederate songs. He became a naturalized American citizen, and died in New Orleans in 1878. He was the father of Dr. Charles Chassaignac.
