Materials include annual reports, scrapbooks, board minutes, newsletters, confirmation records, marriage certificates, journals, registers, correspondence, records of services, financial records, and pamphlets.

Biographical Note

The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana had its origins with the Louisiana Purchase, which brought the possibility of religious diversity, along with newly‐arriving Americans that brought the Episcopal Church. In the beginning, there were only a few scattered congregations, beginning with Christ Church, New Orleans, in 1805. Louisiana organized as a diocese in 1839 and Leonidas Polk was named the first Bishop of Louisiana in 1841. Bishop Davis Sessums (1891‐1929) stressed the corporate and catholic aspects of Anglicanism, and worked to establish Christ Church, New Orleans, as the diocese’s cathedral.
