Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of the correspondence, photographs, diaries and other family papers of Eugene S. Pennebaker Sr. and Frances Ohrum Pennebaker and their family members.

Collection Historical Note

Eugene Strode Pennebaker, Sr. was born on June 14, 1886 in Cairo, Illinois. His father was Charles Beverly Summers Pennebaker (1852-1934) who worked at Cairo City Coal company. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1910 with a BS in Civil Engineering. After college he worked for the W.H. Zimmerman company. He worked for various railroad companies, including the Mobile and Ohio Railroad, Missouri Pacific Railroad, and the Texas and Pacific Railway. Beginning in the 1930s, he began working for the Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Railway company in New Orleans. During his career he lived in Mobile, Meridian (Mississippi), Memphis and Dallas. One of his significant projects was working to build a new union passenger terminal, to consolidate passenger railroad stations and tracks. The terminal opened in 1954.
