Scope and Contents of the Materials

The McConnell family papers include personal papers, legal documents, genealogical materials, photographs, clippings, pamphlets, and financial records relating to members of the McConnell family and other related families, including the King, Logan, Glover, and Fenner families. Also contains the legal papers, including briefs, inventories, petitions, summons, and correspondence, of James McConnell, Sr. and James McConnell, Jr.

Biographical Note

The McConnell family is notable for its involvement in New Orleans history during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lieutenant James McConnell served in the Confederate Army during the siege of Vicksburg. Elizabeth Logan McConnell was active in the New Orleans Era Club, which made great efforts to place a woman on the Louisiana State Board of Education. James McConnell, Sr. was active in the Episcopal Church in Louisiana. McConnell, Sr. also worked with Paul Tulane to establish the groundwork that would found Tulane University and later helped to arrange for the foundation of Sophie Newcomb College. James McConnell, Jr. was attorney for the Federal Land Bank in the Louisiana Division.

Correspondence, briefs, petitions, and notes for suits and other legal matters that McConnell handled. These are arranged alphabetically according to the name of the person McConnell represented. There are a number of items relating to maritime cases that McConnell, Sr., tried; and for the period 1930-1933, McConnell, Jr., as attorney for the insurance firm United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company, handled several cases involving Louisiana Act 20 (1914)--the Workmen's Compensation Law.
