Biographical Note

Don Albert Pardee was born 1837 March 29, in Wadsworth, Ohio. He was educated as a lawyer, reading law in 1859. He engaged in private practice in Medina County, Ohio, 1859-1861. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was a major in the United States Army, 42nd Ohio volunteers, where he served under General Garfield. In 1862, his regiment was transferred to the Army of Mississippi, and as colonel he led his men at Vicksburg and Port Gibson. In 1864, when Pardee was mustered out of the service as general, he moved to New Orleans. In 1868, he was elected Judge of the Second Judicial District of Louisiana, and served by re-election for twelve years. He was a Republican candidate for state attorney general in Louisiana, 1879. The correspondence in this collection primarily reflects Pardee's activity during the Reconstruction period while United States Circuit Court Judge for the Fifth Circuit, serving in New Orleans, 1882-1885.
