Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of Civil War correspondence, military commissions, marriage and baptismal certificates, financial records, and genealogical materials of the Becnel, Armant, Fuselier, Haydel, Himel, and Cantrelle families. Much of the material focuses on Lézin Becnel, who was captain in the Confederate Army and a member of the 30th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers. Included in the collection is his correspondence with wife Amélia Armant Becnel, his diary, his autograph book from his time as a student at the University of Virginia, and the bullet that killed him near Augusta, Georgia in 1864.

Biographical Note

The Becnel-Armant family were joined when Lézin Becnel married Amélia Armant. Lézin Becnel was a captain in the Confederate Army and a member of the 30th Regiment Louisiana Volunteers. He was killed by a bullet wound in a battle near Augusta, Georgia on August 4,1864 and died in Griffen, Georgia. He attended the University of Virginia. The Becnel-Armant family is tied to the following families: Fuselier, Haydel, Himel, and Cantrelle families.
