Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the ordinances, decisions, and resolutions passed by New Orleans City Council; contracts and other documents on the building of bridges, the paving of streets and levees; and records that document the organization of vital public services, including the fire department, health services, and city lighting. There are also financial records from the Spanish period as well as mandates of payment from both the American and Spanish periods. Licenses for taverns, coffeehouses, keeping a cart, et cetera and receipts are in the collection also. There are also municipal records of Lafayette, Carrollton, and Jefferson.
