Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of materials from the Louisiana League for the Preservation of Constitutional Rights (1917, 1934-1970) and Tulane University and Newcomb College's Departments of Philosophy (1924, 1936-1970). The Louisiana League for the Preservation of Constitutional Rights materials include correspondence, clippings, reports, and the results of investigations pertaining to the activities of the organization. The League was founded in 1937 by a group of New Orleanians, including faculty members from Tulane, lawyers, and clergymen, to protect the constitutional rights of individuals, especially the rights of freedom of speech and assembly and juridical and due process rights. Harold Newton Lee was one of the founders of the League and served on the executive committee for the life of the organization, and frequently held the position of president.

The papers relating to the Philosophy Departments of Tulane University and Newcomb College include correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings and administrative papers. Among the topics covered are faculty hiring, course offerings, curriculum development, graduate studies, the Tulane Studies in Philosophy, and other administrative issues.

Biographical Note

Harold Newton Lee (1899- ) was born in Seattle, Washington and earned a B.A. and a M.A. from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Harvard University in 1930. From 1925-1970 he taught philosophy at Newcomb College, Tulane University and was head of the department, 1925-1965. He was also the University Chairman of Philosophy 1954-1957, 1960-1963.

Lee was one of the founders of the Louisiana League for the Preservation of Constitutional Rights and served on the executive committee for the life of the organization, and frequently held the position of president. The League was founded in 1937 by a group of New Orleanians, including faculty members from Tulane, lawyers, and clergymen, to protect the constitutional rights of individuals, especially the rights of freedom of speech and assembly and due process rights. The League cooperated with the American Civil Liberties Union, but wished to remain strictly a local organization.
