Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of correspondence and official documents pertaining to Dr. Joseph Montegut, Chief Surgeon of the Royal Hospital, later the Charity Hospital in New Orleans; Joseph Montegut, Jr. New Orleans official in the Spanish colonial and Claiborne regimes; Raymond Montegut, Lieutenant of Marines at the Battle of New Orleans; and Gustave Le Gardeur, Jr. Colonel in the Louisiana State Militia. There are letters (1832-1833) from Joseph Roffignac, Angoulème, France, former mayor of New Orleans, to Raymond Montegut, New Orleans.

The collection also contains a portions from the Register of Port áu Prince, Haiti, relative, to the genealogy of the Le Gardeur de Tilly family; a photograph of a miniature of James Pitot, second American mayor of New Orleans, and a few pamphlets pertaining to New Orleans and Louisiana.

Biographical Note

The Le Gardeur-Montegut family is a prominent New Orleans family, having three former New Orleans mayors and other important members of society. Dr. Joseph Montegut was Chief Surgeon of the Royal Hospital, later the Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Joseph Montegut, Jr. was a New Orleans official in the Spanish colonial and Claiborne regimes. Raymond Montegut was Lieutenant of Marines at the Battle of New Orleans. Gustave Le Gardeur, Jr. was Colonel in the Louisiana State Militia. Joseph Roffignac, Angoulème, France, was former mayor of New Orleans. James Pitot was the second American mayor of New Orleans.

René Le Gardeur, Jr., the donor of the Le Gardeur-Montegut papers, is the son of Marie-René-Joseph Le Gardeur. His grandparents were Gustave Le Gardeur, Jr. and Sophie-Adélaide Pitot. His great-grandmother, Rosa Montegut, married Armand Pitot, son of James Pitot, second mayor of New Orleans. His great-great grandfather was Joseph Montegut, Jr., and his great-great-great grandfather was Dr. Joseph Montegut. A daughter of Dr. Montegut, Felicité-Solidèlle, married Joseph Roffignac, a mayor of New Orleans. Edward Montegut, son of Dr. Montegut, was also a mayor of New Orleans.
