Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the correspondence of Edwin Lewis Stephens between 1902 and 1937, which was during the period that he was the first president of Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. The letters cover many of the formative years of the institution, which was founded in 1900. The collection also contains many letters, drawings, and other items of Ellsworth Woodward.

Biographical Note

Edwin Lewis Stephens was the first president of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (1900-1938). The received his B.A. from Louisiana State University. Stephens initiated the Alumni Association, The Vermilion newspaper, and L'Acadien yearbook at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute.
