Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of personal letters and postcards from Gertrude Calder, her sister Helen, her aunt Mary Ann, and her great-aunt Mary Ann, from Alex Calder and his wife Catherine Rogers, and from other relatives and friends in Louisiana, Texas, the eastern United States, and Scotland. There are letters referring to a smallpox epidemic in Mermentau, Acadia Parish, Louisiana in 1900 and a 1905 yellow fever epidemic in New Orleans.

The collection also contains materials received primarily by Gertrude Calder from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in New Orleans, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and various charitable orders of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.

Biographical Note

Gertrude Calder had a sister Helen, an aunt Mary Ann, and a great aunt Mary Ann as well as other relatives and friends from Louisiana, Texas the eastern United States, and Scotland. She collected religious material from the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in New Orleans, the Archdiocese of New Orleans, and various charitable orders of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Her godchild is Gyrt Wagner.
