Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of correspondence (1936-1938) dealing mainly with finances, bills and receipts, cash and checkbooks, lists of participants and subscribers, programs, tickets, prompt scripts, newspaper clippings, and one photograph. The programs include those from the Children's Theatre Guild, Experimental Theatre, Modern Film Society, and Le Petit Theatre.

Biographical Note

The Group Theatre of New Orleans was a non-profit community project active during the 1920s and 1930s that was "dedicated to the principle of experiment in all branches of the theatre arts." Productions were presented at Dixon Hall, Newcomb College and included a wide range of classic, modern, local, and foreign works. Some of the objectives of the Group included establishing a workshop in which people could improve their talents or interests as well as sponsoring a program of lectures and symposia on popular and technical aspects of the theater. The Studio allowed those interested in acting, directing, and the technical side of the theater to have instruction. For those with a general interest in the theater, Play Reading and Theatre Literature provided for the discussion and reading of new plays and articles from leading theatrical magazines and newspapers from around the world.
