Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of correspondence, genealogical material, Navy reports, photographs, pamphlets, sketchbooks, poems, newspaper clippings, copies of letters, journals, notebooks, succession records, bank notes, invitations, programs, Navy records, bound volumes, and certificates of various members of the Nicholls family. There are letters from Cadet Francis Tillou Nicholls when he attended West Point and later as Second Lieutenant at Fort Yuma, California, as well as letters of Lawrence D. Nicholls to his family from Manassas during the Civil War. Also included are the World War II letters of Lieutenant Commander Thomas C. Nicholls from the Pacific War Zone. The collection also contains genealogical papers of various branches of the Nicholls family, including the Pugh, Martin, Morse, Welman, Moore, Drake, Maurin, Prescott, deKay, and Tillou families.

Biographical Note

The Nicholls family has long been a distinguished Louisiana family. Cadet Francis Tillou Nicholls attended West point and was later a Second Lieutenant at Fort Yuma California. Lawrence D. Nicholls fought at Manassas during the Civil War. Edward F. Nicholls and R. Welman Nicholls served under Zachary Taylor in the army during the siege of Vera Cruz, Mexico in 1847. Francis T. Nicholls in 1877 became governor of Louisiana and twelve years later served a second term. Thomas C. Nicholls, father of Francis T. Nicholls, was judge of the Louisiana Fourth Judicial District in 1840. Lieutenant Commander Thomas C. Nicholls served in World War II in the Pacific War Zone.
