Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of jewelry designs and drawings by Newcomb-trained metalworker Miriam Levy. There is also a letter from Ellsworth Woodward, a notebook of Levy's clients and prices, Newcomb art class notes, instructions for metalworking, and for a jewelry card layout. Also included in the collection are boxes of drawings, watercolors and prints created while Levy was an undergraduate at Newcomb College. There are also designs created while she was an Art Craftsman (1918-1929), as well as designs for Hausmann's Jewelry Store. These designs include pins, brooches, earrings, pendants, necklaces, crucifixes, belt buckles, rings, and watch bands. There are also designs for flatware, plaques, bookmarks, bookplates, monograms, can labels, and posters. Several personal photographs, art history notebooks, and a box of craftsman's tools are also included. There is an oversize folder of drawings and tracings for the National Eucharistic Congress monstrance of 1938 as well.

Biographical Note

Miriam Flora Levy was born in Franklin, Louisiana in 1895. She entered Newcomb as a freshman in 1913 and graduated in 1916. The years 1916 to 1918 were spent as a graduate student, and afterwards she worked as a craftsman in the Newcomb Art School from 1918 to 1940. Levy was significant in that her medium was metal rather than pottery. In 1940 she began working as a jewelry designer at Hausmann's Jewelry Store where she continued until she retired in 1959. She designed chalices for the Eucharistic Congress monstrance of 1938.
