Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection is made up of manuscripts, drawings, photographs, dispatches, clippings, pamphlets, correspondence, diplomas, and volumes of clippings of articles. There are manuscripts by James Boardman Cable, Kinne Cable Williamson, and Gertrude Duby Blom. There are also photographs of Frederick Cable Oechsner in Germany during World War II, as well as United States Consul in Monterrey, Mexico. The clippings include those written by Frederick Cable Oechsner as well as those about the Oechsner family and about Frederick Cable Oechsner's career.

Biographical Note

Frederick Cable Oechsner (1902-1992) is the son of John Frederick Oechsner (1868-1926) and Caroline Kinne Cable (d. 1963) in New Orleans, Louisiana. He received his bachelor of arts degree and bachelor's of law degree from Tulane University. From 1925 to 1930 he worked as a reporter for the Item-Tribune in New Orleans and the Evening Star in Washington, D.C. From 1930 to 1942 he was the Central European Manager of the New York Sun Foreign Service and United Press America in Berlin. Between 1942 and 1945he worked for the Office of Strategic Services, Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force and special assistant to Ambassador Robert D. Murphy, who was Political Advisor to General Eisenhower. From 1947 to 1952 Oechsner was Special Assistant to Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs, and to Director, office of International Information and Cultural Affairs. Between 1952 and 1954 he was a Foreign Service Inspector and between 1954 and 1956 was a counselor and Deputy Chief of Mission for the American Embassy in Warsaw. From 1956-1958 he was the United States Consul General of Monterrey, Mexico and from 1958 to 1962 was Public Affairs Advisor, Bureau of Economic Affairs. From 1941 to 1942, Oechsner was interned by the Germans along with other American journalists. During this time he and his former staff in Berlin organized a book on the Nazis published in 1942 titled This is the Enemy. He was married to Olga Said-Ruete in 1945. He has one step daughter, Anne Bonville Humphreys.
