Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of correspondence and other papers of Harry S. Michel of New Orleans. Michel helped found the Daily City Item in 1877, and there is correspondence (1880-1881) between stockholders of the company dealing with newspaper matters. The collection also contains copies of the Anti-Taxer (1933), a newspaper dedicated to criticizing the politics of Huey P. Long; the American Progress (1940), which concerns the Louisiana gubernatorial race of 1940; as well as the Federationist (1945), a union newspaper that is covering the liquidation of the Hibernia Bank.

Biographical Note

Harry S. Michel (1858-1933), of New Orleans, helped found the Daily City Item in 1877. He dealt with stockholders of the company and other newspaper matters during the end of the nineteenth century.
