Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection relates to the campaign that preceded the Louisiana Democratic Primary Election held 1918 September 10 to choose a candidate to fill the unexpired term of United States Senator Robert F. Broussard, who died in office. The main contenders were former governor Luther E. Hall and Edward J. Gay of Iberville Parish. Hall's campaign manager was J.F.C. (Ferd) Claiborne. When Gay won a plurality, Hall, who came in second, withdrew from the race.

Biographical Note

Luther E. Hall (1869-1921) was former governor of Louisiana and one of the main contenders to fill the unexpired term of United States Senator Robert F. Broussard, who died in office. The Louisiana Democratic Election, was held 1918 September 10 against Edward J. Gay of Iberville Parish, who had the support of New Orleans Mayor Martin Behrman. John Overton was the third candidate. Hall's campaign manager was J.F.C. (Ferd) Claiborne. When Gay won a plurality, Hall, who came in second, withdrew from the race.
