Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains research notes and material about the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, including muster rolls, which were used for his Louisiana at the Battle of New Orleans (1965). In addition, the collection also focuses on Powell A. Casey's own experiences in World War II as a colonel in the Washington Artillery. There are research notes and material for the book, Try Us: The Story of the Washington Artillery in World War II (1971). Included in the collection are rosters, shipping lists, payrolls, Washington Artillery Veterans Association material, reminiscences, maps, Casey's military record, photographs, correspondence, as well as newspaper clippings.

Biographical Note

Powell A. Casey is the author of Louisiana at the Battle of New Orleans and Try Us: The Story of the Washington Artillery in World War II. Casey served as a colonel in the Washington Artillery, which has its roots in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He researched the Washington Artillery, taking note of the operations of the 141st Field Artillery Battalion, 935th Field Artillery Battalion, and the 773rd Tank Destroyer Battalion, all of which were formed from the Washington Artillery.
