Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists primarily of the writings and speeches of Robert James Kuhn (1900-1975), the inventor of the process of cathodic protection of corrosive metals. Of importance is the 1928 paper Kuhn gave to the United States Bureau of Standards in which he presented his initial discovery. The other papers are extensions and refinements of this discovery. In addition, the collection contains biographies of Kuhn, photographs, clippings about Kuhn's work, as well as the memoirs of his wife, Gladys Story Kuhn.

Biographical Note

Robert James Kuhn (1900-1975), was the inventor of the process of cathodic protection of corrosive metals. In a 1928 paper, Kuhn presented his initial discovery to the United States Bureau of Standards. Kuhn was born and educated in New Orleans and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in engineering from Tulane University. From 1932 to 1936, he was an employee of New Orleans Public Service. After 1936, he was a private consultant. His work was on pipelines and steel wharf facilities. In 1933 he married Gladys Marie Story and had two daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Kuhn Médard (b. 1945) and Suzanne Kuhn (b. 1947).
