Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of legal papers, business correspondence, and writings of John F. C. Waldo (1855-1923), who was a lawyer, author, and public speaker. He was City Attorney of New Orleans (1904-1920), Knights of Pythias Grand Chancellor, and president of the First Unitarian Church. There are legal papers in the collection regarding John McDonogh's estate and the suit of Carleton Hunt versus the City of New Orleans. In addition, there are poems and articles Waldo wrote and collected as well as typescripts, letterbooks, newspaper clippings, and other printed material.

Biographical Note

John F. C. Waldo (1855-1923) was an attorney, historian, author, and public speaker. He was Assistant City Attorney of New Orleans (1904-1920), Knights of Pythias Grand Chancellor, and president of the First Unitarian Church. He was president of the Prison Reform Association; director of the Charity Organization Society; patron of the Order of the Eastern Star; and member of the Shakespearean Society of New Orleans. Waldo was married to Odette Francke and had five children.
