Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of papers of Walthall Burton and family, including bills, receipts, slave sale contracts, land sale contracts, marriage contracts, promissory notes, land grants, correspondence, bills, certificates, and programs. There are large numbers of bills and receipts for various supplies purchased by the Confederate Army and furnished by Burton. Included are a number of government forms signed by several Louisiana governors. Some of the papers refer to Judge Morgan of Opelousas. Morgan and Burton were grandfathers of the previous owner of the collection.

Biographical Note

Walthall Burton came to Louisiana from Kentucky as a young man and became a steamboat captain on the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers and owner of the Glenade and Ashland plantations in St. Landry Parish.
