Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of documents for the Peters, LeMonnier, and Lastrapes families. These three families are connected by marriage, and eventually all resided in New Orleans, Louisiana. With family origins in France, many of the family documents within the collection are in French. The collection contains significant correspondence between the Lastrapes family in New Orleans and their relatives, the Souët family in Castelnaudary, France, where the family originated.

The collection includes birth, baptismal, marriage and death certificates, personal letters, newspaper clippings that concern the families, business letters and documents, and other personal paper material such as pictures and autograph albums.

Biographical Note

The Peters family, originally from Canada, moved to New Orleans and played a large role in developing the public school system. The city honored the family and their contribution to the school system by naming a public school after Samuel Jarvis Peters. The family was also connected through marriage to the Lastrapes and LeMonnier families, two prominent New Orleans families.
