Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists primarily of Confederate officer John Witherspoon Labouisse's letters to his parents in New Orleans. There are also letters to other family members and friends, as well as early correspondence written while Labouisse was attending Harvard College. In addition, there is a copy of a contract between Labouisse and William Sanchez to run a cotton brokerage business.

Biographical Note

John Witherspoon Labouisse was a Confederate officer who served with Charles D. Dreaux's battalion in Pensacola (1861 April-May), was involved in the organization of the 13th Louisiana and went to Virginia with the unit (1861 June-August 1861). During most of the Civil War he served with the Army of Tennessee and participated in campaigns in Mississippi (1861 December-1862 July), Tennessee (1863 January-October), and Georgia (1863 November-1865 March). He attended Harvard College.
