Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of personal letters (1879-1910); legal papers (1879-1910); minutes of the Louisiana Port Investigation Commission and New Orleans and San Francisco Railroad Company (1908); and legal pamphlets (1880s-1910). Samuel Louis Gilmore (1858-1910) was New Orleans City Attorney and later a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1909-1910. There are numerous resolutions for the City of New Orleans for the years 1876 to 1879 in the collection.

Biographical Note

Samuel Louis Gilmore (1859-1910), father of Samuel Louis Gilmore, Jr., and Martha G. Robinson, was born in New Orleans and graduated from public schools. He graduated from Seton Hall College at South Orange, New Jersey. Gilmore received His bachelor's and his master's degrees before attending law school at the University of Louisiana, which would later become known as Tulane Law School. He was a member of the law firm J.C. and S.L. Gilmore and in 1896 he was appointed New Orleans City Attorney. In addition, he was a presidential-elector and voted for Grover Cleveland. His other activities included memberships in the Pickwick and Southern Athletic Club, carnival associations, and the Citizens' League (1896). In 1909 Gilmore became a member of the United States House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., until his death in 1910.
