Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the official records of the Southern Yacht Club of New Orleans, which was founded in 1849. Included are meeting minutes (1849-1978), registers, photographs, a volume of the organization's magazine, and material about the 1972 championship races.

Biographical Note

The Southern Yacht Club is located on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans, Louisiana. The club was founded in the Gulf Coast resort town of Pass Christian, Mississippi in the year 1849 and is the second oldest yacht club in the United States. Activities continued at "The Pass" until 1857 when the club relocated to New Orleans and held its regattas on Lake Pontchartrain. Over the years, SYC sailors have won four Olympic medals and numerous national and international championships.
