Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of receipts, bills, deeds, legal papers, slave records, correspondence, genealogical material, newspaper clippings, land claims, real estate transactions, tax records, and ledgers. The Hoeyville Plantation had a brickyard with three kilns, a saddle and harness factory, as well as a wheelbarrow factory, which sold wheelbarrows in 1848 to Texans in the United States-Mexican War. John Hoey settled there in 1848 and later moved to Willow Street. His wife, Caroline Lovisa Patterson Pierce was the daughter of Joseah Pierce, who bought and sold granite to build Custom House and the base of Gallier Hall.

Biographical Note

John Hoey settled at Hoeyville Plantation in 1848 and later moved to Willow St. Hoeyville was nine miles from New Orleans between Lake Pont and the Mississippi river. The plantation had a brickyard with three kilns, a saddle, and harness factory and a wheelbarrow factory, which sold wheelbarrows in 1848 to Texans in the United States-Mexican War. His wife, Caroline Lovisa Pierce was the daughter of Joseah Pierce of North (?), MA who bought and sold granite to build Custom House and the base of Gallier Hall. Miriam Lovisa Patterson Pierce Hoey (b. 1860) married George Wood Stem in 1887. Her daughter is Mrs. Henry Fish Reynick. Elizabeth Hoey married Conrad Bearegard Fisher.
