Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of primarily financial records of the New Orleans Typographical Union No. 17, a typesetters' union. There are receipts, check stubs, records of membership dues, as well as treasurer's records. In addition, there is material about the international union, which held its 1884 annual meeting in New Orleans. The collection also contains a copy of the constitution of the New Orleans Typographical Union No. 17 as well as lists of officers and members, and an annual report for 1873.

Biographical Note

The New Orleans Typographical Union No. 17 is a typesetters' union established in 1852 by one hundred and fifteen representatives of fifteen New Orleans printing offices. The union is meant to ensure fair wages, encourage an effective apprenticeship system, ensure the relief and burial of members, and elevate the profession as a whole. Gerard Stith, the foreman of the composing room of the New Orleans Daily Picayune and later mayor of New Orleans, was the union's first president. It is the oldest trade union in New Orleans and is affiliated with the International Typographical Union, the Louisiana AFL-CIO, and the Greater New Orleans AFL-CIO council.
