Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of the correspondence, papers, and writings of several members of the Claudel family. There are the papers of Thomas Hayes, who preached at the Seamen's Bethel, which include clippings, correspondence, financial records, sermon notes, and religious material. His granddaughter, Alice Moser Claudel, was a poet, teacher, and editor of the New Laurel Review. Her papers contain correspondence, poetry, essays, New Laurel Review material, a biography, notes, and school papers. Alice Moser Claudel's husband, Calvin Claudel, was a professor of Romance languages and wrote about Louisiana folklore. His papers contain correspondence, writings on folklore, poems, essays, reviews, and a biography. Alice Claudel's son by a first marriage, William Rivera, is also represented in the collection by his correspondence, clippings, certificates, poetry, writings, and photographs. In addition, there are the papers of the National League of American Pen Women, Incorporated, Crescent City Branch as well as phonographic records of interviews of natives of Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana.

Biographical Note

Alice Moser Claudel (1914-1982) was married to Calvin Andre Claudel (1916-1988) and was the granddaughter of Thomas Hayes. She was a poet, teacher, and editor of the New Laurel Review, a poetry review serial, and was born and died in New Orleans. She had one son, William M. Rivera, by a first marriage. Calvin Andre Claudel was born in Avoyelles Parish and died in Baton Rouge. He was a professor of Romance languages and wrote about Louisiana folklore. Thomas Hayes was president of the Temperance Society in 1883 and preached at the Seaman's Bethel.
