Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of chiefly professional papers of Richard P. Adams (1917-1977), former Chairman and Head of the English Department at Tulane University. There is biographical information, correspondence, articles and portions of Adams' book about William Faulkner, as well as book reviews, a map, and pamphlets on Faulkner. In addition, there are copies of Adams' doctoral dissertation on Nathaniel Hawthorne in addition to several boxes of note cards with his interpretations of the works of American writers on them. General correspondence as well as correspondence from when Adams' was on the editorial board of the journal, American Literature can also be found in the collection.

Biographical Note

Richard Perrill Adams (1917-1977) was former Chairman and Head of the English Department at Tulane University. He was born in Kansas and earned his doctorate from Columbia University. He wrote critical studies in American literature. His major work was Faulkner: Myth and Motion, published by Princeton University Press in 1968. He wrote essays on many academic topics, including academic freedom in the South and economics of the profession. He served the University on many important committees. In addition, he was active in the American Association of University Professors and wrote about a wide range of American poetry and prose.
