Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection focuses on the career and research interests of Walter S. Jenkins (1909-1990). Included are scores, long-playing records, audiocassettes, correspondence, sheet music, and photographs. In addition, there are research materials pertaining to New Hampshire-based composer Amy Beach (1867-1944). He wrote a biography about her, The remarkable Mrs. Beach, American composer: a biographical account based on her diaries, letters, newspaper clippings, and personal reminiscences, which was published in 1994. Jenkins was also a faculty member at Newcomb College and Louisiana state chairman of the American Guild of Organists.

Biographical Note

Walter S. Jenkins (1909-1990) was born in Manchester, New Hampshire and attended the University of New Hampshire where he graduated in 1931. He then went on to earn a master’s degree from Harvard University. Jenkins was a faculty member at Newcomb College from 1946 to 1974 and then became an emeritus professor until his death in 1990. He was also Louisiana state chairman of the American Guild of Organists. He had a lifelong interest in New Hampshire-based composer Amy Beach (1867-1944) and did intensive research about her. He wrote a biography about her entitled, The remarkable Mrs. Beach, American composer: a biographical account based on her diaries, letters, newspaper clippings, and personal reminiscences, which was published in 1994.
