Biographical Note

Charles Cassedy Bass (1875-1975) was the son of Isaac E. and Mary Wilkes Bass and born in Carley, Mississippi. He received his medical degree from Tulane University in 1899. In 1897 he married Coraline Howell and practiced in Columbia, Mississippi from 1899 to 1904 when he began doing research in New Orleans. One of his major discoveries was the cultivation of malarial plasmodia in vitro, which was brought to full use when Bass did research in the Panama Canal Zone in 1912. Bass became Professor of Experimental Medicine and Director of Laboratories of Clinical Medicine at Tulane University from 1912-1940, and served as Dean of the School of Medicine from 1922 to 1940. From 1940 until his death, Bass did research on and promoted the "Bass technique" of preventative dental health care, the currently accepted model of dental care. He served as president of the American Society of Tropical Medicine, authored and co-authored several books, as well as over one hundred and sixty articles and brochures.
