Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of research notes Louis Panzeri (1902-1983) used for his book, Louisiana Composers; programs and brochures; music associations material; and early letters on musical subjects. Panzeri, a music teacher and voice coach in New Orleans, collected Louis Moreau Gottschalk correspondence, mementoes, and newspaper clippings, which are also included. There are obituaries of other musicians as well as a photograph of the choir at St. Patrick's Church, New Orleans.

Biographical Note

Louis Panzeri (1902-1983) was a music teacher and voice coach in New Orleans for over fifty years. His mother was Genoese and his father was Sicilian. Panzeri's father was an artist and skilled metalworker who executed the alter in the church of the Immaculate Conception in New Orleans. Panzeri wanted to study music from a young age, but was not encourage to do so. He was a child soloist at the St. Louis cathedral at age twelve. He attended the French Grammar School and Jesuit. From age 24 to 29, he had an illness diagnosed as tuberculosis, and spent this time in the Ozone Belt near Covington until he recovered. When he returned to the city, he began to teach music. Panzeri began the Apollo Music Chorus, a male choral group that performed classic and popular programs. He published his book, Louisiana Composers, in 1972.
