Scope and Contents of the Materials

The diary is that of a young Southern woman (from Kentucky?), married with one young child. It describes travel on river boats and trains, meals, parties, theater, and visits to Vicksburg, New Orleans, and Bishop Leonidas Polk's home near Thibodeaux. Miriam Badger Hilliard was the sister of Senator Samuel Badger, who married Bishop Polk's sister, Mary.

Biographical Note

Miriam Badger Hilliard was a Southern woman, possibly from Kentucky, who had one child. She was the sister of Senator Samuel Badger (1786-1866), who married Bishop Leonidas Polk's sister, Mary.
