Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of three letters from Edmond Begouën Demeaux in the United States to his brother Gustave Begouën Demeaux in Le Havre, France (1865 November-1866 April). Demeaux writes about emancipated slaves, the Freedman's Bureau, and general conditions in Mobile, Alabama. One of the letters (1865 November 27) describes the effect the war had on the size and condition of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. The 1865 November 27 and December 4 letters are copies (partial) and the 1866 April 3 letter is a copy plus an original. In French.

Biographical Note

Edmond Begouën Demeaux was the brother of Gustave Begouën Demeaux and the granduncle of Maurice Begouën Demeaux.
