Scope and Contents of the Materials

One issue of the Daily Citizen of Vicksburg dated 1863 July 2, edited and published by J.M. Swords. It was printed on wallpaper due to a paper shortage. The issue covers both local news and news about the war. It was produced during what is now known as the Siege of Vicksburg, 1863 May 18-July 4, the final major military action in the Vicksburg Campaign.

Biographical Note

J.M. Swords edited and published the Daily Citizen of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Like several other Southern newspapers of the Civil War period, its stock of newsprint paper ran low and Swords had to resort to using wallpaper. On this substitute he printed the following known issues: June 16, 18, 20, 27, 30, and July 2, 1863. Each was a single sheet, four columns wide, printed on the back of the wallpaper. On July 4, when Vicksburg surrendered, Swords fled, and the Union forces found the type of the Citizen still standing. They replaced two-thirds of the last column with other matter already in type, added new text, and started to print a new edition.
