Biographical Note

André Lafargue was born in New Orleans in 1879 of French parentage. After studying at Tulane Law School, he practiced law in New Orleans, becoming the attorney for the French consul. He served on numerous committees devoted to the preservation of French culture and language in Louisiana, as well as on other community-oriented organizations. He was interested in French aviators, the Tonnère, and Edgar Degas. The French government appointed him Commander in the Legion of Honor, partly in recognition of his service for French interests as secretary of the Alliance Franco-Louisianaise, an organization which helped encourage the teaching of French language in New Orleans schools. Having once served as an editor on the French language newspaper, L'Abeille de la Nouvelle-Orleans, he contributed articles to many newspapers in both French and English.
