Name: Chase, John Churchill.


Historical Note: John Chase (1905-1986) was a noted cartoonist, illustrator, and writer based in New Orleans. He is best known for his editorial cartoons for the New Orleans States-Item newspaper as well as his illustrated historical works on New Orleans and Louisiana. He wrote Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children and Other Streets of New Orleans and Louisiana Purchase: an American Story. Chase is also known for doing editorial cartoons on television on WDSU-TV during the 1960s and early 1970s as well as creating the covers of football programs. He was a contributor to the work, New Orleans, Yesterday and Today: A Guide to the City with Walter G. Cowan, Charles L. Dufour, Osborne K. Leblanc, and John Wilds. Chase created a large historical mural for the New Orleans Public Library. He also taught a course on New Orleans history at Tulane University. Chase was married to Frances Chase. He died in 1986.
