Historical Note: Maurice Ries was, for several years, a staff member of the Middle American Research Institute, Tulane University, and served as co-director with Arthur E. Gropp in the early 1940s. His commentary was used in a 1939 film titled Middle America, which was narrated by Lowell Thomas and John Martin. After leaving New Orleans, Ries became active in the motion picture industry in California. He began a manuscript on the history of the House Committee on Un-American Activities of the United States House of Representatives.
