Name: Usher, Robert James, 1880-
Historical Note: Robert James Usher (1880-1944) was head librarian of the Howard-Tilton Library at Tulane University from its inception in 1938 until his death in 1944. Previous to this, he was librarian of the Howard Memorial Library since 1927. His papers document book purchases and administrative activities at the Howard Memorial Library and the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library. He purchased for the collection books from the dealer Charles Heartman of the Book Farm, Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Usher and his wife, Ethel Wight Usher, gave papers on various topics to different groups, including "The Baking Industry in the United States," "The Mississippi River in Literature," and "The Life and Work of Emile Antoine Bourdelle." Ethel Wight Usher was on staff at the Howard Memorial Library and later was in charge of duplicates and exchanges at the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library until her retirement in 1958.
