Provosty family. | Tulane University Special Collections
Name: Provosty family.
Historical Note: The LeDoux family originated in the town of Le Mans in the area of the Department of Sarthe (Maine). The first key figure is Jehan Le Doux (d. 1640), and the second major figure is Louis LeDoux (1639-1708), from whom the Louisiana branch of the LeDoux family is descended. On the way to Louisiana, the LeDoux family spent a generation in Canada. By 1745, Pierre LeDoux had settled, along with other Frenchmen, in the rich bottom land of the lower Mississippi and began plantation life in Pointe Coupee Parish. Successive generations of LeDoux were to live in the parish as lawyers, doctors and plantation owners. The LeDoux family were interconnected and allied with other families in the parish, notably the Provosty, Dayries, and the Labry families.
