Historical Note: Beverley Du Bose Hamer Peery (1913-1997) was a drama professor at the University of New Orleans and was married to Dr. William Wallace Peery. She is the author of Commencement, a three-act drama, as well as Funeral Flowers for the Bride, a three-act comedy. Along with Dr. William Peery, she composed the two historical plays, To Make Men Free and United We Stand in 1939 on commission by the North Carolina Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee to commemorate the anniversary of the ratification of the United States Constitution by the State of North Carolina. The play was designed to be performed throughout the state in various high schools.
