Historical Note: Henry Dickson Bruns (1859-1933) was born in Charleston, South Carolina, but his family moved to New Orleans when he was still a child. He attended the University of Virginia and received his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1881. As a physician, he came to specialize in the eyes, ears, nose, and throat. He was also very active in politics, acting as a member -at-large of the Louisiana constitutional convention of 1898 and fighting unsuccessfully for woman's suffrage. In 1907 he served as president of the Louisiana State Medical Society. He was also a founder of the Honest Election league in 1932, an organization dedicated to fighting for legitimately registered voters.
