Historical Note: Virginia Downman Kock (1935-1995) was born in New Orleans and attended the Louise McGehee School and then attended Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, graduating in 1952. She taught music at the Academy of the Sacred Heart (1956-1962) and entered graduate school at Tulane University in 1961, receiving a Master of Arts degree in musicology in 1963. Kock received her Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1969 and became a professor of music at the University of New Orleans.
